Vision + Growth: Lessons from Year Three

On our startup alum road trip this past Fall, we swung into Talking Waters Brewing Co. in downtown Montevideo. Let’s start out by saying that a coffee cake cream ale at 11AM really is quite the treat and a nice jumpstart for the day. Betsy and I had the chance to catch up with Nick Patton, owner and head brewer. The TWBC team went through startup in June of 2017, so it was fun to find out what was new in their world.

Like any other business, each year brings new challenges. Year three of operation for these guys has been no different. In our conversation with Nick, there were two key things that stood out.

1. The importance of having a vision that’s meaningful. Hopefully that stems from the “why” we work through during bootcamp. But most importantly, it should be something that serves as a guiding light for your business and the decisions you make to build your brand. Especially, when it comes to creating marketing strategies for your brand.

2. Growth looks different for everyone… and sometimes you have to get creative. In order to continue growing, TWBC had to find a way to push out more beer (via distribution in cans/crowlers) which inevitably means making more beer. Limited by the height of their brew room ceiling, they had to go against the traditional brew equipment purchases and custom build a solution that allowed for more beer to be brewed using the same amount of space (AKA short, fat tanks).

Morale of the story, there’s always a solution. It just might not look the same as your competitors. And, that’s usually a good thing.
